Maladum | Why I Bought Two Copies and Still Love It
Maladum is a fantasy miniatures board game set in the kingdoms of Enveron. You control small bands of adventurers seeking fortune across a detailed 3D gaming area. No painting required.
The core loop is simple but tense. Venture out from your camp, complete objectives, defeat enemies, and most importantly make it back alive. Every time your adventurers act, the game fights back. Revenants shamble toward you, wandering beasts emerge from their lairs, and lost NPCs stumble into the chaos. It is all controlled by the game mechanics.
I actually bought two full copies of Maladum. That gave me double the dice, double the character boards, and double the terrain. It was absolutely worth it. Having the extra pieces makes solo play much smoother and lets me build bigger, more interesting dungeons.
Why I love playing it: It is perfect for solo play. Random events, randomly placed enemies, and smart enemy mechanics keep every game feeling fresh and dangerous. The terrain is fantastic. Setting up a dungeon takes time and effort, but once it is built it looks incredible and creates an immersive experience. A full dungeon usually takes me about a month to play. A few days to set up, then sessions spread out over weeks. It reminds me a lot of my old favorite from the late 80s, Hero Quest. The game gets harder the longer you stay in the dungeon. The tension builds naturally, which makes every successful return to camp feel earned.
Even after losing a lot in the fire, Maladum is one of the first big games I want to rebuild my collection around. It is just that much fun.

I also bought all the expansions for Maladum and two of the Dungeon core sets from Battle Systems to create my epic 4×3 gaming table dungeons. Can’t wait to get my table set back up. Hopefully it will be better than before!
