The Land of Time | Session 5

Danger lurks beneath the waves.

4/16/2026 – The Secrets Among the Waves
The chest, swollen and battered by the relentless sea, still clung stubbornly to its secrets. Captain Salt knelt beside it, her weathered hands steady as she worked the rusted lock with the tip of her knife. For a tense moment the only sounds were the creak of the ship and the crash of waves… until the lock finally surrendered with a sharp, metallic click.
Captain Salt lifted the lid slowly, the swollen wood groaning in protest. Inside, nestled among damp cloth and a few scattered coins, lay something unexpected…
What does Finnley find? (Roll twice!)
On a 1: A blood-stained leather journal belonging to one of the raiders. The last few entries mention a hidden cove called “Blackthorn Reach” and a meeting with someone they call “the Broker.”
On a 2: A small ornate silver crown – clearly not cheap. It’s dented and has a few gemstones pried out, but the craftsmanship suggests it once belonged to someone important.
On a 3: A glowing magical compass that doesn’t point north. Instead, the needle swings toward the Jagged Teeth and occasionally pulses with faint red light when pointed south.
On a 4: A severed hand wearing a signet ring engraved with the Farthwell village elder’s crest. The ring is still on the finger.
On a 5: A bundle of rolled-up maps showing the southern coastline, with one particular cove marked heavily and annotated “Slave pens – high value cargo.”
On a 6: A locked iron strongbox inside the chest (nested). It’s smaller and much heavier. The lock is intricate and clearly magical.
On a 7: A beautiful but cracked hand mirror with an inscription on the back in an old language. When Finny looks into it, he briefly sees a woman’s terrified face (possibly his mother or sister).
On a 8: A strange obsidian dagger with red veins running through the blade. It feels unnaturally warm to the touch and seems to hum faintly when held.
Finnley rolled a 1 and an 8.
The first thing he pulled out was a blood-stained leather journal belonging to one of the raiders. The last few entries mentioned a hidden cove called “Blackthorn Reach” and a meeting with someone they called “the Broker.”
As Finnley paged through the blood-stained journal, Captain Salt reached deeper into the chest and lifted out a strange obsidian dagger. Red veins ran through the dark blade like frozen lightning. It felt unnaturally warm to the touch and seemed to hum faintly when held.
Captain Salt’s face darkened the moment her fingers closed around it. “This is no ordinary blade,” she muttered. “It’s a blood-forged weapon. Only the worst of the raiders carry them.”

What dark secrets lie inside?
Finny stared at the dagger in her hand. The journal and the blade together told a chilling story: his mother and sister had almost certainly been taken south… and the raiders who took them were far more dangerous than he had imagined.
Lila leaned in closer, her eyes wide. “Why is it bloody?” she asked quietly. “Do you think the raiders got attacked by someone else… or did they do this to each other?”
Captain Salt gave a low grunt. “Could be either. Raiders turn on each other all the time when the spoils are big enough. Or maybe they ran into something worse out here.” She tapped the red veins on the blade. “This thing feels wrong. Like it’s been fed.”
The three of them sat together on the gently rocking deck, passing the items back and forth, trading quiet theories about who the “Broker” might be, why the raiders would need a blood-forged weapon, and what kind of trouble might be waiting for them at Blackthorn Reach. For a few minutes the only sounds were the creak of the ship and the crash of waves… and the slow, uneasy birth of new conspiracies.
What direction does the boat sail next?
On a 1-2: They head West – straight into a raging storm.
On a 3-4: They head Southwest – toward a massive whirlpool that threatens to pull them under… and possibly teleport them somewhere unexpected.
On a 5-6: They head Southeast – where something large and dark moves beneath the waves… a sea monster surfaces.
Finnley rolled a 1.
As the group debated their heading, Finny flipped through the blood-stained journal again. One of the last entries caught his eye: a warning about dangerous reefs to the southwest and a recommendation to head due west to avoid them, even if the weather looked threatening.
Captain Salt read the entry over his shoulder and gave a grim nod. “West it is then,” she muttered. “Into the teeth of whatever the sea has waiting.”
The wind began to rise within the hour. Dark clouds rolled in from the west like an angry wall, swallowing the sun. The waves grew taller and meaner, slamming against the hull with increasing fury. Rain lashed the deck in sheets. The little fishing boat pitched and rolled violently as the storm swallowed them whole.

Captain Salt’s eyes burn as power surges through the blade.
Finny gripped the rail with white knuckles, his newly learned knots straining as the sails fought to hold. Captain Salt shouted orders over the howling wind while Lila clung to the mast, her eyes wide with fear.
The sea had decided their next lesson would not be gentle.
What happens during the raging storm?
On a 1-2: Finny’s newly learned knots slip under the strain – a sail tears free and chaos erupts on deck.
On a 3-4: Captain Salt is nearly tossed overboard by a massive wave; Finny has to act fast to help her.
On a 5-6: A lightning strike hits the mast and snaps it in half, sending sparks and debris flying across the deck.
To be continued in Sssion 6…
